Buddha Purnima is the day when Buddha opened his eyes in the world. Buddha Purnima is considered the most auspicious of all the days because, on this day Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and Nirvana. This day also known as Buddha Jayanti is the most sacred day in Buddhist calendar and celebrated with great enthusiasm. Buddha Purnima is especially celebrated enthusiastically by the adherents of Buddhism. Gautam Buddha was the founder of the Buddhism and it is believed that he was the ninth avatar (incarnation) of Hindu god Vishnu. He was born on Buddha Poornima, the full moon night in Vaisakha, to king Shuddhonna and queen Mahadevi, but his mother died only seven days after his birth. It is believed that Buddha lived a princely life till the age of 29. It was prophesied by the royal astrologer about Buddha that he will become either a famous emperor or a world-renowned ascetic. He was kept completely ignorant of the sorrows of everyday life. When he saw an old man and dead body for the first time in his life he was shocked to the harsh and real realities of life. His father took extraordinary precautions to avoid every situation which would provoke such thoughts in his son's mind.

Buddha Purnima is generally celebrated by lighting oil lamps before the images and statues of Gautam Buddha, by reciting prayers or reading the scriptures. Buddha attained Supreme Enlighten at Boddha Gaya. Pilgrims from all over the world come to Bodh Gaya to take part in the Buddha Purnima celebrations. Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti celebrates the three most important events, his birth, enlightenment and nirvana in Gautam Buddha's life.

The most important festival of the Buddhists, Buddha Purnima falls on the full moon day of the lunar month Vaishaaka (that corresponds to the month of April-May) - a special time in Buddhism as it was on this day that the Buddha was born, gained enlightenment and attained Nirvana when he died.
